Composting

How It Works

Composting

The Climate Action Reserve is developing a GHG reduction project protocol for organic waste composting projects in the United States. This protocol will provide a standardized approach for quantifying and monitoring the GHG reductions from projects that avoid methane emissions to the atmosphere through the diversion and composting of municipal food waste that would otherwise have been sent to a landfill. This new project protocol will build largely on the Reserve’s protocol for Organic Waste Digestion projects.

For more information on GHG project accounting issues related to composting projects, please review the following issue paper prepared by SAIC.

Protocol Development Kickoff Meeting

The Reserve hosted a public meeting to kickoff the protocol development process for the Composting Project Protocol in Portland, Oregon, on December 9, 2009. The meeting provided a venue for the Reserve to discuss composting project GHG reductions and the protocol development process, as well as solicit information and feedback from the public. Please see below for the kickoff meeting agenda and presentation.
