Retail purchases of CRTs
When purchasing carbon offsets that have been issued by the Climate Action Reserve, the unit of measurement is the CRT (Climate Reserve Tonne), which represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions reduction or sequestration (CO2e). CRTs are well respected as being among the highest quality offsets available. They meet the criteria of being real, permanent, additional, verifiable and enforceable. This means CRT buyers can be confident that the offsets they purchase provided true and credible benefit to the environment.
Only Reserve account holders can trade CRTs or purchase wholesale quantities. However, if individuals or organizations want to offset their emissions for activities like travel and business operations, they can purchase and retire small quantities of CRTs through an account holder that is a retailer. In this process, the retailer retires CRTs into a retirement subaccount on behalf of the individual or organization. If the retailer is retiring more than 99 CRTs on behalf of one buyer during a calendar year, it must disclose the name of the buyer and the reason for the retirement. One account holder may not retire more than 19,999 CRTs for the same individual or organization during a calendar year.
