The Reserve is developing an Adipic Acid Production Protocol that will provide guidance on how to quantify, monitor, report, and verify nitrous oxide (N2O) emission reductions at adipic acid production facilities.
The draft protocol is available for public review below. The protocol will be presented to the Reserve Board of Directors on September 30, 2020.

Issue Paper and Proposed Protocol
- Proposed Adipic Acid Production Protocol – Submitted by ClimeCo (October 26, 2019)
- Adipic Acid Production Issue Paper (October 3, 2019)
This issue paper, developed by ClimeCo, reviews the potential to reduce GHG emissions and generate voluntary offset credits, or Climate Reserve Tonnes (CRTs), by creating an Adipic Acid Production Protocol through the Climate Action Reserve. It summarizes the existing literature, reviews data and quantification methodologies related to adipic acid emissions abatement, and leverages lessons learned from historical international projects. Because adipic acid production and GHG abatement technology closely mirrors the production and abatement of GHGs from nitric acid production, this issue paper relies heavily on the Reserve’s existing Nitric Acid Production Protocol.
The Adipic Acid Production Protocol is being developed through the Reserve’s multi-stakeholder workgroup process. The Reserve strives to create a well-balanced workgroup consisting of industry representatives, environmental NGOs, project developers, verification bodies, independent consultants, academia, and government bodies. Workgroup member organizations include:
|ClimeCo Corporation||Ruby Canyon Engineering, Inc|
Stakeholders not chosen to be part of the workgroup are welcome to participate in the process as “observers.” Observers may attend workgroup meetings in listen-only mode, comment on the draft protocol when it is released for public comment, and attend the public webinar held during the public comment period.
