Version 1.0

The Climate Action Reserve is kicking off the development of the Argentina Landfill Protocol, which will provide guidance on how to quantify, monitor, report, and verify greenhouse gas emission reductions associated with installing a landfill gas collection and destruction system at a landfill located in Argentina.

In 2018, Argentina generated nearly 14 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW), or approximately 0.86 kilograms per person per day, according to the Ministry of Health and Environment. About 10 percent of this waste was recycled, while the remainder ended up in landfills or was improperly disposed of in open dumpsites. Although most municipalities have irregular final disposal systems and generally rely on open dumps for waste disposal, some have implemented sanitary landfill systems as a more controlled method of disposal. In 2017, around 65 percent of MSW was deposited in landfills. The Argentina Landfill Protocol aims to address these challenges by providing carbon credits to encourage the capture and destruction of methane, which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

Local Stakeholder Engagement

The Reserve seeks to engage local stakeholders throughout the protocol development process to identify and incorporate applicable laws, norms, and conditions to the landfill sector in Argentina. To help ensure that interested stakeholders receive the appropriate notifications for public engagement opportunities during protocol development, please complete the following Local Engagement Form and submit it to [email protected] .

Workgroup Process

The Argentina Landfill Protocol is being developed through the Reserve’s multi-stakeholder workgroup process. The Reserve strives to create a well-balanced workgroup consisting of industry representatives, project developers, environmental NGOs, verification bodies, independent consultants, academia, and government bodies. Interested stakeholders are encouraged to apply by filling out the Statement of Interest form below and submitting it to [email protected] by December 4, 2024. All workgroup meetings will be held in Spanish.

Interested stakeholders that are not part of the workgroup are encouraged to participate in the process as “observers.” Observers may attend workgroup meetings in listen-only mode, submit written comments on the draft methodology when it is available for public comment, and attend the public webinar(s) held during the public comment period.

Kickoff Webinar

The Reserve held a kickoff webinar on November 27, 2024, for the development of the Argentina Landfill Protocol. The webinar was held in Spanish.
